The recently reconstructed Rumene Manor, located about an hour from Riga, is one of Latvia’s best kept secret hideaways, a step back into the beauty and serenity of another era.
The 19th century Neo-Gothic manor house on the shores of Rumene Lake is surrounded by a 7 hectare landscaped park. Period furnishings complement the understated elegance of the house once owned by Baltic aristocrats, set in the relaxed country atmosphere of an unspoiled area of Northern Europe.
The award-winning renovation of the manor was completed in 2009 by Latvian architect Zaiga Gaile. Rumene Manor is the country residence of the 5 star Hotel Bergs, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ and its services meet the highest international standards.
Special events and celebrations can be held there such as small dinners in a private salon, cocktail parties, seated dinners and buffet style events. In summer, the park, lawns and neo-renaissance terraced stairway descending to the lake provide a spectacular setting. Private music performances can add to the already special ambiance. Meeting and conference services are also available.
A stay at Rumene can include active outdoor activities, such as hiking, bike riding, fishing, boating, golfing, horse-back riding and go-karting, or relaxed ones such as walks in the park, sauna and massage treatments, or one can simply enjoy the serene atmosphere.
The nearby hunting reserve provides excellent deer and wild boar hunting. Rumene Manor also offers wine tastings and cooking classes, presented by the Bergs Restaurant executive chef, Kaspars Jansons.
The area around Rumene Manor is rich in history. The charming little hilltop town of Kandava first mentioned in 1230, was once a stronghold of the Teutonic Knights with the town center and cobble-stoned streets changing little over hundreds of years. Not far away are the fortified castles of Slokenbeka and Edole, and several old manor houses. Kuldiga, the former seat of the Duke of Courland (Kurland, today Kurzeme), has well preserved 17th and 18th century wooden houses.
Nature has also blessed this corner of the world. The beautiful Abava Valley with its forests, flower and corn fields, and even some vineyards is often called “Latvia’s Switzerland”. Lying only 2 hours away, the coastal cities of Liepaja and Ventspils are connected by pristine white sandy beaches and occasional little seaside villages which are well worth a visit.
